Has the power of networking helped you find a new job?

In an article published by the BBC today, it suggests that January is a month for self-improvement like no other, with many people “networking” to get a new job. One business school has gone as far as appointing a “professor of networking”, but do you still need to schmooze to get ahead?

How Do You Stand Out From The Crowd?

Knowing where to start on your job hunt can be a daunting task. Sign up with specialist recruitment agencies as they should be able to provide you with helpful tips and potential inroads into your chosen career. Research local companies in your area and be proactive with sending out your CV - even visiting companies in person is a great way to make contacts. It’s not easy as the job market is so competitive at the moment so make sure your CV makes the right impression. As long as you are doing everything you can, then your break into your gem of a job will come. Most of us don’t start in the job we end up doing and you need to see your career as a journey picking up valuable skills along the way.

It’s all about Attitude

According to a report recently published in the Daily Telegraph, work ethic, not skills is the key to getting that first job. An overwhelming 82% of employers rated attitude and work ethic as important when recruiting “entry level” posts, compared to 38% who named just literacy and numeracy.  For interview tips and preperation advice please do visit the Rubyred Candidate page.

Make Sure Your Application Sparkles With Success

According to the BBC News website today, a graduate job vacancy now receives on average 85 applications… http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-13934518 (read full story here)

That’s a lot of competition and you need to make sure you stand out to secure an interview. Here at Rubyred, we too receive volume applications for the creative roles we advertise. Applying for a job does take time and you need to make sure that your CV, covering letter, application form and certificates provided are relevant and tailored to the role you are applying for. DON’T just send out volume applications – it’s really obvious and gives the wrong impression of just going through the motions.

Applying for a job is an exciting and positive step in your career so don’t fall at the first hurdle.  It’s important to show enthusiasm at all stages of your application process as this comes across in your communication. Amongst the excellent applications we receive daily,  it’s surprising to us the number of covering letters, CVs and emails we receive that include incorrect job titles, addressee details, spelling mistakes and irrelevant skills highlighted – these come from both experienced and inexperienced job hunters.

A successful application from a candidate invited for interview (whether applying for a specific graduate role or not), will most likely have a well laid out, relevant, logical and personal CV. The profile section on their CV will have been written specifically to show why they are suitable for the job applied for. Candidates who have included a covering letter (where requested) highlighting additional skills and reiterating their interest in the job where relevant, also stand out.

Make sure you read the job description and company website thoroughly before applying for a job and draw out the most relevant skills on your CV mirroring the job details.   Don’t be modest but be concise. Ask someone to read through the job description and your CV to make sure they understand your CV and also the relevance of your application. A second pair of eyes really helps!
